i am a born again red head. i love it. a lot of the people i respect/ look up to are redheads... my boss, joan from madmen florence welsh.... i secretly feel like all the real redheads must hate me for getting in on their individualism but no-one has said anything yet.

being a blonde i guess i always had a certain level of attention/stereotype and responsibility... well, i didn't realise i did until i went red....

also i am loving it but i do find i attract a different person out on a saturday night..... the younger kind... so theres a social experiment waiting to happen! heres some images i keep on my computer that are redheads that i love and inspire me to stay red! my bank account however needs no inspiration.

i have figured they look kewl with a plain tee (jersey, woven or silk) or a chiffon shirt like im wearing in the pic.. and then if a jacket is needed… your blazer (cropped or otherwise) will be your friend here. a flouncy blouse would work but will look really 70's so it depends if you want to go 40's style (cooler colours mod prints), 70's hippy style (browns, autumunal solids and ditsy florals) or geisha style (spaced out oriental florals and border prints, pictured).

vintage shopping over the weekend, found me kind of lusting over this interseting belt… so doesnt go with my outfit but im loving the 'sculpture'-like nature of it… lets face it, the buckle kind of looked like it had been run over by a car but i really liked the colour usage with and i'm going to use the buzz word... colour-blocking.

shopping over the weekend in (wintery) melbourne left me absolutley STARVED for colour! there is so much dullness out there as mentioned in this article about J brands bright denim bases.great read!

bright colour, and the right colour is what the fashionistas are wanting. a few(colour)blocks across town my stylist friend found this orange sweater at another vintage shop… and it was the same time (we were picture msging each other - only realised now how dorky i am sticking my tongue out… it's hereditary by the way) and we stumbled upon a great epiphany…. when retail is not fast enough to give you what you need.. you are left with no choice but to go vintage.

just finished up one of those weekends where if there was any more fashion eye-candy & regular eye-candy, everyone would have diabetes. not that diabetes is funny but seriously saw some sweet stuff on the old w/e.

2. after being locked out of my house most of saturday. and enjoying a few cocktails at Bar Nothing, went to the coolest house party i ever went to. saturday night. you know its a great party when you get home at 6am and youve danced the bejeebez out of your body in someones lounge room. sadly no photos but i know there is a sick one of me and my friend adelaide. will post if i can find it in the internets. oh but this is what i wore on saturday, the nail-polish i bought after i got counselling form the shop girl and a comedy festival street performance on swanston street.

it's disgusting how badly i need a photographer to follow me around.

3. awesome church gathering at Red Church the people are real friendly and cool and what they are about is so cool. so so much food-for thought.

4. best meal i've had in ages with friends. it was an everyone-bring-a-plate affair and was completely delicious and burned anzacs cause much delight. love to have quality friends to enjoy quality food with. pictured is angus' "F A M O U S" brownie and quitas delicious anzacs with liahs yum custard.

the bad thing about working with folowing trends for both hemispheres is that you get excited about trends and cant wear them because the weather is opposite!

i have been obsessing over cuddle collared jackets known as shearling... you will see it sneaking in the the dregs of this australian winter but next autumn we'll all be wanting one!

it just seems tht the buzz word this week is quilting! i was surprised and happy to open a fresh Vouge today and find that the latest fall/winter 2011 Louis Vuitton shoot features a quilted dress!

i tried putting a close up of these images i found on he world wide web but its a tad pixelated. not sure if you can see the detail (you may have to purchase an august vouge! - or go to borders like i unashamedly did for years)

so my good friend liz, who i talk about alot., is in the middle of a massive project! its calledproject patchwork and she is getting all these amazing-ly lovely people to help sew a patch. she really has worked incredibly hard and will be no doubt working as we speak to sew everyone's patch together!

i helped her out with sewing one of the patches for the heart quilt. and here is my little patch

below! i sewed mine on the way to work on the train every morning for a week. it was SO fulfilling.

also wanted to share with you all the beauty of arabella ramsay. coincidentally she has a quilt thee to here spring sumer line and as i peeked through the cute as website i found myself loving all her little outfits! she is so my style and i love the way her stuff is feminine and a little bit quirky but most of all stylish.

ok so it is no lie that i have spent some time overseas (in thailand for a friends wedding and singapore for fun) and have far too much col stuff to show you about what i saw so i will attempt to spread it out into bite size chunks for you all... x

firstly here is a gorgeous stall in Patong beach who had the COOLEST and CUTEST little clothes out of the whole market. she has these very sweet little cropped shift tops that she sews herself. and i got the most amazing jumpsuit from her but i want to use in a proper photoshoot so i will wait to show you that! it was so refreshing to find such a cute fashion conscious, handmade stall amongst the fake ed hardy and tiffany&co.

this is me with the stall holder and garment maker. I'm wearing one of the little cropped numbers that this stall is famous for.

so i heard a cool thing today that sparked my interest...
in the old bible theres a verse in exodus chap 31:1- 7 where it says how God specifically gave creative ability to this dude named Bezalel to design and work with wood and gold & silver. pretty cool right...

but its verse 6 that gets me... the bible says "Moreover, I have appointed Oholiab son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan, to help him"

um so like i have been thinking about community lately and how it is the only hope for our society to operate in love and so that the poor are helped and everyone is leaning on each other (will go into my in-depth thoughts on this another time)
and today i realised the connection between brilliant design and art and how it comes when you have help. whether it is someone to give you creative feedback, encourage you or help you come up with the idea, some of my best work has come when i work with others help.

community + design = goodness

amazing things can be done. and i realised God thought of this thousands of years before i did.

when a tooth falls out, you can get a shiny gold replacement to show how wealthy you are (and im sure there are other boring, medical reasons you can read up on here)
i didnt exactly lose a nail but i decided that my aqua nails needed a reesh-looking friend. theres something comical and classy about the one-gold-nail thing. its quite liberating... just use the tester at your local beauty counter and try it for yourself. but dont tell anyone i told you!

seeing as i have had a lot of compliments on my tiffany blue nails of late i have really enjoying wearing them out and when i saw this guitar today i thought i should probably live up to my nails, buy the guitar, get lessons and become a superstar.

in my weekends and very short night-times at home i have been designing the encourage magazine, celebrating the 23rd annual "me" festival (my birthday) and perusing online shops (i am officially addicted) seriously! miss selfridge, asos, urban outfitters, forever21, topshop, LA vintage! i cant keep my eyes off them! i have only made one purchase though because i am saving for my holiday which is in precisely 12 days!

seer-sucker fabric colours

the other day at work i was asked to draw some seer-sucker shorts...

now ive heard this word a lot lately in regard to upcoming trends and pictured it being some sort of sucky-inny pant thing. similar to a body con sports illustrator look.

my discovery to this strangely named fabric came when someone show me a swatch and i realised i had a pair of high-waisted shorts in that VERY classic blue and white stripe seer sucker that i bought from an op shop in my home town!
i asked my good friend wiki to tell me more and found that the seer sucker name came from "Hindi, which originates from the Persian words "shir o shekar," meaning "milk and sugar", probably from the resemblance of its smooth and rough stripes to the smooth surface of milk and bumpy texture of sugar."

and i also found out that it is a very American fabric particularly from the south and was designed as a summer and spring fabric as the bumps make it so that there is air between the skin and the fabric, making it cooler!! AMAZING!

so i broke all the rules and wore my own seer suckers to work on monday (with tights of course) and felt very trendy. yet another $2 buy that has adorned me with now-ness.
here is the outift the night before i wore it as i was colour blocking it (sorry i forgot to take a photo of me in it) i ended up wearing it with a navy blazer (i realy tried to work in my Anorak!) and not sure if you can see the mullet hemmed lace crop number i wore on top. cant wait to spring to be cool in two ways! (apparently they are everywhere in America for spring/summer atm)!

visiting my family is always fun. this time that i went we all helped make an amazing cake! i saw a picture on a blog and was inspired, so i conned all my siblings into helping me...

So we all went and bought the ingredients and mixed and licked the bowl.

Then we put them in the oven...

then played monopoly while they were in the oven...

and 1.25 kg of icing later.... we had a 100's and 1000's logistics crisis!

but alas, the end result was bright and colourful and most of all delicious!

i tried copying this & ended up needing the hairdo to top it off.

sometimes i get so frustrated when i see something uber tremendous and i am overwhelmed with feelings of love and jealousy which eventually turns into mad creativity at how i could make my own version of it. ah yes well that what happened when i saw the window display of this reesh lighting store. its paint on clear vinyl cut out in geometric shapes.

Apparently the display was for the designer Rowena Martinich for her work Chromaphos. sorry for not uploading sooner the exhibit is kinda over now... what about an online exhibition though...check out the site... its not as cold as standing outside a store front in melbourne right now. gosh i love central heating.

um so quite a number of weeks ago i went to the camberwell market with some new sydney friends and i was very broke so i side lined it so that i wasn't depressed and just watched people. while i was people watching i noticed this wall. imagine being the first person to put their chewy there. they started something that has made a difference and when they put that first piece of chewy there, it wouldn't have made much of a difference but as people worked together, the atmosphere of that wall changed. mm deep

the other night the weather was lovely and i spent the evening with my lovely friend, and brilliant designer, mike and lovely housemate dave. we went to a typography exhibition. i dressed up in a spotty dress and wore some lovely pinky red lipstick (something i rarely do).
i enjoyed my leisurely bike ride home and dropped past the supermarket to pick up things for dinner and as i walked in, i noticed that i turned a few heads, "that dang lipstick must make me look like marilyn munroe..." i thought to myself.walking down the lolly aisle where i probably shouldnt have been, i noticed a pick smear on my arm. in all my "trying to be lady-like" i had forgotten not to wipe he sweat of my upper lip with my arm and turned out walking through the grocery store looking like the flipping Joker! oh heck.
lesson learned: lipstick + bike riding = dont mix
i saw the funny side immediately and felt the need to share it with you all. x

(ill admit this second photo is a tad it enhanced but it did look like this at the supermarket. i just waited til i got home to take the picture and of course when i realised in the supermarket i immediately and crazily wiped off all the embarrassment.)

a little cafe opened down the street in the smallest little brick building that used to be a little weighbridge checking point once upon a time. i cant wait to see if their coffee is as good as their cute little signage.

in life there are little gems. sometimes you put them in your ears like these earrings i own and love (ummm how cool do they look with the sun streaming through them).

God gave me some very precious gems in my life, some rare ones too... you see there is this amazing girl living in singapore whom i absolutle adore and she is one of my favourite people. she is beautiful and has such amazing charm and is extremely stylish. she helped me out with something lately and again i am wowing at her amazingness. ahhhh gush <3

it no secret... i love clocks.
i dont think there is a deep underlying meaning beneath it but i just like the way they look.
i like that they are practical and beautiful at the same time... not like a vase that is only practical sometimes. here is my favourite one that i own, it is gorgeous and i longed for it for a long time before purchasing it and it was then that my realisation that my love was there and it is a love and a collection that i will always have.
(if you are switched on you would have noticed the new addition to my blog recently the lime clock... i go the idea from Bloom cosmetics' blog. everytime i look at it i imagine that the citrus juices are making it work.)

and below is another clock i have bought. i have my eye on a massive KARLSSON one on ngv gallery shop and i imagine putting it in a small small room in my awesome apartment i am going to live in one day, just to accentuate the large-ness of it. here are some that are on my "one day" list...

yesterday i saved a bad accident from happening at a busy intersection on lygon st.
it was extremely windy and a polystyrene box flew onto the road and was flying in front of cars and i road my bike out to a very dangerous position (as the lights had turned red) and picked up that box and took it out of the way... my heart was pumping so hard and a few cars beeped and waved their thank-yous.
it felt so good and i just wanted to help more people and right then a girl came up to me and asked directions... while i was in the middle of destroying the foam box and binning it. i felt an amazing rush as i kept riding. it was so windy but i felt like nothing could stop me and i could conquer the world! it just felt good to know i had helped when everyone else decided to sit back and wait for something to happen. it reminded me of my friend Hannah who stopped on the freeway to help a lost puppy once. i can now imagine the rush she must have also felt :)

worse than spending ALL your rent money on a designer handbag is smoking.

smoking is just downright unhealthy. it smells bad and drains your money and makes you go outside alot (or just to rooftop bars).
but can i just say that (even though i will never take up this habit) when i see some one highly fashionable or european gracefully glide their hand and puff the most beautiful of clouds of smoke there is something about the style and look that makes me want to light up.

is smoking back in fashion?

i'm finding that all it takes is a packet of fads (candy shaped like cigarettes) and im pretending that my broken french is natural and that i own the world with my designer hand & mouth feature.

well i guess if i do a pack a day of fads i can always run it off around princes park...something i couldn't do if i'd stuffed up my lungs from actually smoking.

on thursday just past in melbourne, we had an absolute humdinger of a storm that brewed after a few very hot days... the rain was so imminent and almost looked like it wasn't going to come.... but then boy did it come!!!
it was the craziest downpour i had seen in a long time.. im talking about having to yell so someone can hear you talking!
anyway sitting on my computer and gazing out the widow at the H2O explosion outside i had an idea to draw a picture in watercolour penicls and put it outside so the colours would run and be cool although by the time i finished the picture the rain had slowed down to a drizzle :(
but i will upload the before's and after's anyway.. you can kind of see the difference.. didn't quite get the seeping colours effect i was after though.

so my housemates have decided (inspired by a project in the book below) that they want to make out back area of our backyard a bar/cafe one night a week a la the picture below. um wow ok guys this is pretty big.... i got a lot going on at the moment but as the little sister character ill just follow along... it actually would be pretty cool though cos we have a super cool laneway entrance and a sweet space for it and their idea is are to have a cover charge to cover costs and then give any profits to charity. oh im sorry i meant OUR idea. its really serious.... we even went on an excursion to section 8 to see how they did the crate thing.
anyway before you know it ill be getting up at the crack of dawn on a saturday morning serving poached eggs with dukkah and asking if you ordered a long mac or a long black.
see how this book is changing my life!!!!!!!!!!

just continuing on the last of my posts on tasmaniac (as i like to refer to it as). i wanted to mention how happy i am to be an australian. i mean we live in a wild country and the people that settled here when it was first discovered must have been the most crazy adventurous people with amazing creativity and stamina. i imagine pulling up into the harbor at hobart and seeing the land in all it unique beauty and wondering what is out there. who lives there? how is it all going to work?
even though all my family migrated from Holland in the 40's and 50's i still think those migrants would have had a crazy adventurous personality and creative spirit to pack up and move to a huge island in the south pacific! quite frankly i am so happy to be part of a country with such exciting beginnings (and don't get me started on how adventurous the aboriginals were before English settlement).
even though i know australia is a bit far away from the world etc, i think we really do have something unique and very creative to offer the world :)

oh and whilst we are on the australianarama vibe, the other day i opened a fresh jar of vegemite (exciting i know) and it reminded me of when i was little, we used to fight over who got to open the lid of a new spread and who ever got to open it dug their knife deep into it making their initial in it. its crazy what kids will find to fight over. but i won this one. sorry tristan, this jar of vegemite is branded with an 'M'

the docks

I recently went on a trip to hobart, tasmania. it was so lovely to be on holidays. i was pleasantly suprised by how much i enjoyed the city itself. as i consider myself a bit of a city girl, visiting hobart i wasn't sure if i should be prepared for a backward little town or a capital city. what i instead found was the best part about hobart was the history and the buildings and knowing they were built by convicts.
this strip of arty cafe's and gallery which used to be a jam factory and its right near where the docks are.
the brown building on the far left as a little gallery with some amazing sculptures... my favourite was a giant wooden clothes peg, carved out of australian hardwood. brilliant.
there was another gallery behind and through the courtyard. it was awesome my dad and i got lost is the awesomeness. it had some very highbrow pieces in it. some early settler beauties... the prices were high but with good reason.
i nearly bought a renoir... yes thats right... for $450. it was just a simple sketch he did of a face. what an addition to my collection already though! but i couldn't spend my rent money on art. thats just silly.

how cool is my lil sis?
we had a lovely time in the city together when she finished her exams last year. she is exquisite, so caring and lovely and funny. she loves cuddles and warm fuzzies. she just got an offer to go to uni to be a primary school teacher and i think she will make the best teach ever. love you sb. xx
